Tank Information:

Dimensions: 72x36x20
Total Gross Water Volume: 255 Gallons
Sump Net Water Volume: 18 Gallons
Estimated NET water volume: 185 gallons

Calcium Reactor: Schuran Jetstream 1 Calcium Reactor

Run at 46ml/min with 110bubbles/min
Reactor filled with 70% Schuran Course Coral + 30% ZEOmag addition

Reactor has only been running for 3 days at this point and I have only seen an increase of .03 in pH. I havent started tweaking at all. Ill see how it does for another while at the recommended values.

Skimmer: Deltec TC 2560 External

Rating: (External) 500G Heavy/600 Normal Stocking
Flow Rate: 600G/hour flow rate

I have been using this skimmer for 2 months now initially thinking it might not keep up with my desired bio load I was wrong, I think I am still over skimming!.

I now turn the skimmer off via the Neptune when feeding the corals for 90 minutes. I find this at least gives the corals a chance to absorb the phytoplankton and marine snow.

Lighting

For lighting in the main display tank I use a Vertex Illumina 200 LED system with Cree LEDs.
I currently have the light configured for the following:
White XPE-100lm/W 7000K: 40% 11:00am-7:00pm with a 1 hour dawn/dust fade in
Blue XPE-23.5lm/W 470nm: 100% from 6am-midnight with a 2 hour dusk/dawn
Royal Blue XPE-350mV 450nm: 100% from 6am-11pm with a 2 hour dusk/dawn

Water Movement

For Water Movement I use:
3x EcoTech Vortch MP40w with ES kit
2x Vertex MOcean 3500 Sea Swirl (400G/h pump for each Sea Swirl)
CoraLife Rubo-Sea 1740P (1744GPH) used as the main pump with three intakes into the tank
2x Koralia 1050GPH Power Heads to keep water movement in the back corners

Test Kits

ELOS test kits for:
Neptune Probes for pH, Salinity, & temp. Probes calibrated correctly, salinity double checked with refractometer daily.
Water Parameters
Temp/Salinity
78.8-81.0 | 34-35%
Ammonia/Nitrate
No detectable levels present
PO4/NO3 Levels
Currently my PO4 is sitting at 0.08 where I had it down to .00-.01 less than a week ago. I believe the increase may be caused by a recently BIOmate double dosage (me and my wife dosed)
Ca/Alk/Mg/pH Levels

Problems
Soft corals seem to have lost a lot of length - low nutrients + first does of ZEOspur2? has had them closed for 2 days now. Water parameters are hard to stabilize so I purchased quad dosing pump and CaCO2 reactor to start dosing/automate the system a bit more.

How should I tune my CaCO2 reactor, and how long should I wait before testing the pH/Mg/alk again?

Some SPS are very dark brown.

Still learning the best way to take photo's against LED light, so far.. nearly impossibly.

All suggestions, comments welcome, thanks

The main water parameters are all relative low for the salt use so can I would recommend to cross check salinity with a second accurate instrument. Great introduction of your system, thanks for sharing !

thanks Alexander,

I double checked the salinity against a vertex salinity meter (after calibrating to the included RO water, it reads 34%)

Could my recently added CaCO2 reactor be dropping these levels due to poor setup or misconfiguration?

Is there a way to raise Ca, Mg, Ak levels safely?

Awesome looking set up youve got going there pal..

I would suggest stop dosing Strontium, and pottasium, these elements only really start to deplete when your corals are using a good amount of bi carb and cal from the water, which i dont think you are experiancing at the minute, that much tissue in that much water will get along just fine with what comes in from your weekly changes, infact i would stop everything except the basics and perhaps a little sp, cv, a couple of times a week, its easy to add per gal volumes to a reef that doesent have alot of living tissue to it, and what you invariably end up with is stock that isnt happy and you dont know why..

Also i would never add Zeo 2 to a reef that isnt doing really well, it will just stress out your corals as you have found, i would put this in the cuboard for at least a couple of months,

Your reactor once set up will be able to maintain your parms without a problem, you may only need it for part of the day at first as your reef matures, use it during the day light hours if so,

With a little patience your reef will fill in nicelly soon

Good luck
Yus

I do not think the CaCO2 reactor had any negative impact to those level, still weird as they are to low for RB salt. Can you tell how much grams of salt you have used to prepare 1 US gallon of water ?

While struggling to keep my water parameters stable, my frag tank shows significant color difference than the front main display lit with a Vertex Illumina LED at full blast (100% white, blue and royal blue).

I purchased a ATI 10x80watt T5 setup which I am hoping will help increase coloration.

I am using the following configuration:

1 KZ New Generation
2 KZ Super Blue
3 KZ New Generation
4 KZ Super Blue
5 KZ Fiji Purple
6 KZ New Generation
7 KZ Fiji Purple
8 KZ New Generation
9 KZ Super Blue
0 KZ New Generation

Frag Tank Images (lit by a Tek T5 8x39 watt, similar bulb setup)

Corals in the front tank lit with the illumina LED

New Light

I will upload some pictures of the coloration changes as they happen. I've placed the light roughly 20" above the surface of the water, and will lower it slowly as the corals adjust.

Any recommendations on how high this light should hang with a 22" deep tank?

my net water volume is now 320G with the sump change, My current dosing regimen is:

3L of zeovit stones shaken 2x daily
12 drops bak 3x per week
30 drops sponge power 2x per week
20 drops coral vitalizer 2x per week
14 ml Phols Xtra

20ml coral snow 4x per week (twice mixed with 6 drops KZ Amino acid)
12ml CB mixed with 12ml FWS

K+, KH, Mg added when needed, tested weekly (still fine tuning the calcium reactor after a media refresh.)

Any recommended changes? My alkalinity is hard to maintain, any ideas?

I just miss ZeoStart in your dosing regimen ?

Are both NO3 and PO4 undetectable ?

From the pictures I think you use a Schuran Jet Stream 1, had running the same reactor on my old tank which had a similar volume. Was able to keep the KH stabile around 7 but had to add coral gravel every two weeks. Can you tell how many CO2 bubbles per minute and which flow you have adjusted ?

What a set up and great pictures!

Technical issues aside, do you have a yellow banded maroon clown fish in with your common clowns? If so, how do they get on? We have a single common clown in our nano waiting to go into the new tank and my wife has her heart set on a pair of yellow banded maroons but we've been told they're incompatible

Hi Colin,

Thank you for your comments. In answer to your question yes you are correct, they are incompatible. The maroon clown is very territorial (and a **** to boot). I try to catch him regularly so I can place him into the frag tank so he can live on his own. The maroon clown seems to be a 'bitter old man' that simply hates everyone/thing for no good reason. I simply made a terribly uneducated decision at the time and discovered this the hard way (as with most things . I hope this helps

Hi G,

I did miss Start3! oops Thanks! . I am currently dosing 2x daily 2.4ml after shaking the reactor vigorously (also, a correction to my net volume, it is currently 360G)

NO2, NO3, NH4 are undetectable with ELOS test kits.

PO4 is 28 (Oct 7th reading. I have run out of test solution. the LFS should have it by next week. I believe this may be high due to my RO water filters (now recently changed) and shifting a lot of the tank and upsetting it when extending the sump volume. However, my corals were dark before this, but Ca and Kh levels have been an issue for me, even knowing slow/less is more methodology

You are correct about the ca reactor, it is a Schuran Jet Stream 1. I currently have it set for 100 bubbles per minute, with and out flow of 1.1ml constant flow rate. I have the pH probe calibrated and configured to turn off the reactor at pH of 6.30. I have tested the output water directly and the dKh shift was roughly 7.9 (1.3 higher than the tank water at the time). I tried the recommended 40ml/min output at my Kh dropped to 4.63 over two weeks while I was on a business travel.

The media is the Schuran brand, with added KZ Magnesium granulate (which is very stable.. the only stable parameter in my tank! lol)

Hope this helps, thanks for the questions and help

Perfect, the dosing regimen is looking good.

I have run my old Schuran without a PH controller and had usually running 120 – 150 CO2 bubbles per minute with a constant flow of ~ 3 – 3.5 liters per hour. This has worked well for my system which was stocked heavy with corals (consumers). You might try to stop regulating the PH for some time and increase the water flow to 2 liters per hour. Please keep in mind to check the KH daily, if possible twice per day while doing changes to the reactor settings to prevent heavy KH swings.

I will order a 50ml dosing pump this evening and configure the ca reactor at 120-150 bubbles with 3L output checking alkalinity daily.

I just tested the alkalinity and i'm at 7.84 dKh currently. Still no PO4 refill kit

Thanks G!

Also, the new light is already helping the brown sticks in my main display! I will take daily pictures and update late next week.

Great tank ! Good you switched to T5. Maybe still a bit blue with all the New generation tubes. I have the same tube configuration but in stead of New generation I have coral light. It looks a little bit more sunny and there is enough blue from the super blues.
