Default New Zeovit user in Ireland

Hi, I recently joined the Zeovit reef keeping method after numerous years running the Balling method with Biopellets, Mineral Mud system, Triton system and ATI Essentials system. Although I have had lots of success, I have always admired the Zeovit 'style' of reef keeping.

My first glance of a Zeovit system was with Krzysztof Tryc's reef in Poland many years ago. That was all the encouragement I needed and the inspiration has now given me the desire to go Zeovit.

I have recently purchased a nano tank and transferred my lps and softies to that tank leaving my main display tank free to go full blown sps.

Can the experienced Zeovit guys please give me some input and guidance. I am on day 7 now. Are the following details and dosing regime ok?

These are some details:

1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) - US gallons / UK gallons / liter
165 gallon
2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) - US gallons / UK gallons / liter
106 US gallons
3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique
No
4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.)
No
5. Are you using Ozone
No
6. Are you using UV
No
7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume)
Bubble Magus Curve 7 rated at 240 US gal/900 litre
8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels
Po4 = 0.03
No3 = 0.05
9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels
Ca 455
Alk 7.7
Mg 1350
10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.)
Just Live Rock, Filter Sock, Skimmer and Zeovit
11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.)
ATI Powermodule Hybrid 6x39w with 2 x Kessil A360W E at end of Powermodule direct toward centre of tank.
12. What corals do you keep
Mixed
13. Tissue color (light or dark)
95%of corals are light
14. How long has the tank been running
35 weeks on balling method with Fauna Marin supplements
15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system
I've admired it and been curious for a long time
16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.)
Calcium, Magnesium and Alkalinity (Balling) with Fauna Marin 'Colours' supplements
17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.)
Real Reef Rock in tank 35 weeks from new 45Kg
18. Any present problems
Slight problem with Cyano Bacteria
19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.)
None at present
20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.)
Salifert for all and occasional Triton ICP
21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.)
60% of 1Kg Zeovit as advised, Zeobak 2 drops twice daily, Zeofood 4 drops daily, Zeostart 0.4ml twice daily, Pocci Glow 8 drops daily, Coral Vitalizer 8 drops daily, Cyanoclean 8 drops daily, Coral Snow 8ml every other day, 275ml KZ Carbon in sock.
22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.)
1.026 temp is 26c
23. Which salt brand do you use
Tropic Marin Pro
.
I run Zeovit reactor three hours on three hours off (is this necessary?).? 10% water change weekly, when dosing Zeobak and Zeostart, I dose at inlet of reactor feed pump.

Tank turnover is with 2 x Ecotech MP40 QD running reef crest at maximum 90% and 2 x Jecod SW8 along back wall pointing down running at 100%. I have a 4,000 litre per hour sump turnover rate.

I also run a bare bottom at present as I dislike the sand being displaced with high flow and siphoning of detritus. What is recommended in regards flow and sand bed?

I also run a granulated Carbon Dioxide filter to keep Ph high.

Occasionally I do a 'bubble scrub' with wooden airstone at inlet of return pump, is this advisable/ok?

Is there any further advice or guidance please?

Many thanks guys.

Hello k_mac, welcome to the Zeovit Forum

Cyano bacteria problems, most people who get Zeo Coral Snow can get improvement. 1ml = 100L = 25 US gallons.

Let's try a 2:1 dose Zeo CS+Zeo Bac Mix well for about 10 minutes and pour into the Tank.

Slight, can be added every other day
Serious, Zeo CS can use the maximum 5 times dose

Try to change the water flow position, Skimmer adjusts the wet, and changes the filter socks every other day.

You can also keep separate Zeo CS additions every day, and mix them with Zeo Bac's add-on day.

Lighting can be added at any time, either on or off, without any restrictions

For the first time, it is recommended to adapt the coral system to the environment at a dose of 0.5ml = 100ml.

System conversion, it is indeed a way of 3 open 3 off

First of all I would recommend to download the dosing guide from:

http://www.korallen-zucht.de/files/z..._english-1.pdf

It contains a lot of useful information and will be helpful to get a feeling for the dosage.

First start with the basics products to decrease nutrients:

1. Place 1 liter zeovit in a Zeo Reactor. Water flow around 400 liters per hour. Connect the reactor pump to a clock timer and run the reactor pump with a 3 hour on / 3 hour off / 3 hour on interval. Please make sure the zeolite is not exposed to air while the pump is switched off. Clean the material daily. Leave the zeolite 4 weeks in the filter until you do the first change out. This is the first changing interval, others could be lengthen to 6 – 8 weeks.

2. Place 0.4 liters activated carbon in a filter sock and keep it in a passive water flow in your sump, changed every 30 days. Knead the carbon daily to keep the surface clean. Most users get perfect results with korallenzucht carbon.

3. Dose 4 drops ZeoBac daily for the first 2 weeks, flowed by a 2 – 3 x weekly dosage of 4 drops. Dose 0.4 ml ZeoStart 2 x daily (morning & evening). Dose those in front of the Zeo reactor pump while it is switched on.

Later on you could use the additional products for coral coloration. Adjust your skimmer to skim wet, keeping it clean to export as much as possible. Do a weekly water change of 5 – 10 % with a good salt.

Basic water parameters looking good, try to keep them as stabile as possible close the NSW in the following ranges:

KH 6.5 – 7.5
Ca 400 – 420 mg
Mg 1250 – 1300 mg
K+ ~ 380 mg

For a nutrient poor environment K+ (potassium) seems to be a important element. I would recommend you to get a test kit for this element also, posting your results.

Stop dosing the coloration elements you dose at the moment.

This is a start-up dosage which might have to be adjusted later.

G.Alexander
