Default Hi Nitrate Help Please

Hi I need some help please I started with a zeovit system back on 27/01/2019 as a mature tank to control my nitrate and phosphate levels and promote healthy corals.

Corals are all doing a lot better but I cannot drop my nitrate levels at all and my phos has to be controlled by phosphate removers.

I have 2 tangs, 2 clown fish, 6 Cardinals, a Beta Marine, Copper Band Butterfly, Mandarin, Goby, Engineering Goby, Blenny, 2 Cleaner Shrimp, few snails etc. I feed 2 blocks Daily.

Below are tank details im estimating water volume as not full accurate way to judge, I use 1.75KG of Zeovit media changed 6 weekly and I leave 10% of old media in the reactor. I add 1ltr of active carbon monthly, Flow is 1 ltrs per 5 secs.

1. Gross water volume of your complete system - Im estimating 700Ltr
Tank is 1820mmx610mmx590mm and sump 1200mmx370mmx280mm so ive worked that to 777ltrs and knocked 77ltrs off for rock

2. as above
3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique. NO
4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.) YES ATI Phosphate Stop, all the time to keep phos down or it shoots up high.
5. Are you using Ozone. NO
6. Are you using UV. NO
7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume) Bubble Magnus
8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels PO4 today 0.2 Nitrate 50ppm
9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels Ca450, Alk/Kh 7, Mag 1330
10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.) Filter Sock Only
11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.) Radion XR15w G4 Pro x 2 and Radion XR30W G4 Pro
12. What corals do you keep - mushrooms Riccodias, Acans, bubble tip, zoas, Kenya tree Monti plate.
13. Tissue color (light or dark) Middle
14. How long has the tank been running 18 months (was a smaller setup for another year transferd to bigger setup)
15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system, to maintain healthy corals/tank to maintain levels.
16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.)
17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.) Hard to tell 100KG + over 2 years
18. Any present problems - Casnnot get NITRATE lower than 50ppm, and Phos needs ATI Phos Stop to bring low.
19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.) Cyno outbreak since using Zeovit, using CynoClean currently
20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.) Salifert and Hanna Phosphorus tester
21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.)
Zeostart 1.4ml daily, Sponge Power 7 drops every other day, Zeobak 8 drops twice a week, Coral Snow once a week, Coral Snow plus once a week and Cyno Clean 14 drops daily now.

22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.) 1.026 Sal 25.6 degree C
23. Which salt brand do you use - Neo Marine from Brightwell Aquatics.

Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks Rob

It is not recommended for any type of PO4 adsorbent in the Zeo system.

It is recommended to reduce the material by 1/2, and gradually reduce the material in a weekly decrement. During the period, attention should be paid to PO4.

Zeostart0.7ml x 2, every day,
Sponge Power7 drops, every other day,
Zeobak 7 drops 2~3 times a week

Use 1.75 liters of zeovit in a Zeo reactor

Zeo Bac x10 days after each change of ZeoVit material (Bac 7 drops x 10 days)

A 180-gallon system should fill a 1/2-gallon pitcher in 10 seconds.

The amount of activated carbon is 0.5~1 per 1000 liters of water.

The activated carbon is placed in a filter bag and placed in a passive stream of water in the oil sump and replaced every 30 days. Rub the carbon every day to keep the surface clean. Most users get the perfect result with korallenzucht carbon.

Adjust your skimmer to keep it wet, keep it clean, and export as much as possible. Add water with salt and change water 5-10% per week.

Get potassium test kit, K+~380 to 400 mg

Hi Rob

Can you please tell us something more about the history of the system ?

Would be important to know if you had nutrient issues also before you have started to use Zeovit ? If possible please post a picture of your sump and a full tank shot.

In the meantime can you please tell us how much ZeoVit system you have running in your reactor and what exactly the reactor flow is (measured) ?

G.Alexander

Hi yes I was experiencing hi Nitrate and PO4 previously to the zeovit system.

as said already I use 1.75kg of zeovit with a flow of 1 ltr per 5 seconds.

If I stopped using ati phos stop then my po4 goes high.....

I can do photos later tonight.

Thank you, the reactor flow is OK.

Your dosing regimen is fine but I see the PO4 as the main problem instead of NO3. This is the first thing I would try to work on.

Therefore you need to find the reason for the elevated level, might it be the rocks you have used ? Can you tell something more about them, where they are coming from, which kind those are exactly ?

In the meantime I would adjust the skimmer to skim more wet, clean it daily to export as much as possible. Additional vacuum your sand while each water change and remove the sediments from the sump.

If you do not use korallenzucht carbon you can try to put some of the fresh carbon in some RO water. Let it soak for about 2 hours and measure the PO4 level of the water than. If the carbon does leach PO4 the water should have a high concentration.

Thank you

The rocks are all from "other" mature tanks and ive had them in mine for 2 years (smaller tanks). Other than that I cant really specify on what they are.

The sump was full of rock and when I switched to zeovit I gradually removed it all and sediment. The sand I have started to vac recently in the hope to reduce levels and will keep up with.

I will start cleaning the skimmer daily thank you, it is running wet already.

I will test my carbon, but before using zeovit I never used carbon and still had high levels so don't think its the carbon.

I try to dose it everyday to curb cyano bacteria. I would use the Coral snow plus for your tank.

What are you levels of Phosphate currently and what are you goals.
Are you only feeding 2 cubes a day still it seems strange that, that would cause a problem.

I feed twice as much in a tank half the size I also use Nopox at 8 drops a day you might want to try it out

1. Suitable hourly ZeoVit reactor flow
2.Zeo basic products
3. Replace the water
4.CoralSnow
5.Do everything as much as possible, Skimmer adjustment, replacement filter socks, etc.
6. Reduce feeding
7. Well balanced spectrum

What are all current doses and frequencies?

"And cyno I want to lower. Yes, it is still 2 cubes every day, I can't give it up"
(I don't know much about "cubes", reduce it, I think it should be good, is the Cyno problem solved?)

What is the amount of water that you think after deducting the rock/sand bed?

Use the container to collect the ZeoVit reactor outlet for 30 seconds, x120, to get the exact output per hour

Looks good, ZeoVit reactor flow does have an impact on malnutrition

Give the system some time and do some output/cleaning as much as possible

Skimmer, change filter socks, change water, siphon, etc.

If you prefer, after cleaning the ZeoVit material, Bac, Start can be tried before it drops into the reactor.

Too much blue light doesn't seem to get more coral color and malnourished water quality,Balanced spectrum is the best
