Default questions about high nitrate

Hey guys,

I have run zeovit for almost three months. but i still suffer very high nitrate.

i went home for holiday for three weeks, in which time i lost a clam, a 2-3 inches butterfly fish, and some small LPS (and a flame clam i think because i could find out where is that now). unfortunately, my friend did not take out the dead things so they rotted completely in my tank. when i got home, i can only found white skeletons of them.

To deal with the overloaded organic, i changed 50%, 25%, and 25%water in the past three weeks. Also i use 10ml zeolife in the morning and zeozym at night (zeozym is a little bit over dosed) daily in the past two weeks to help the system to get rid of the pollution.

phosphate was 1, but i have used the absorber to control it below 0.1 now.

before i went home for holiday, the nitrate was 50-70, and it keeps the same now. i think the zeovit defensed the spike of ammonia and nitrate which were from the dead fish and coral.

basically i dont have any delicate coral in my tank, only a few of mushrooms. i would like to know will the zeovit work for my tank or is there any thing i could do to get rid of the nitrate faster?

here is some of my tank's information:

1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) => 130L
2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) => 100 lt
3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique => no
4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.) => No
5. Are you using Ozone => No
6. Are you using UV => No
7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume) => reef octopus classic 100 HOB
8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels => PO4 is 0.1 and NO3 is 50+ with salifert
9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels => Ca 420, dKh 7, Mg 1400, K 390
10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.) => No
11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.) =>ecotech radion g4 15W pro
12. What corals do you keep => only a few LPS
13. Tissue color (light or dark) => darker
14. How long has the tank been running =>three month for zeovit
15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system => get rid of nitrate

16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.) => Only current dosing is Zeovit
17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.) i use aquaroche with some live rocks to introduce the bac. around 5 kg

18. Any present problems => sky high nitrate

19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.)=> Same as above
20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.) => salifert
21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.)
250ml zeolite, 1 drop bak every two days, 0.1*2 ml zeostart3 daily,10 ml zeolife daily, zeozym every two days. biomate 3 drops every two days, 1 drop sponge power daily.

zeolite has been cleaned twice a day.
i put the zeolite in a HOB filter and measured the water flow which is a little higher than 400L/1L. i think in this situation it is acceptable.

i didnt think changing water can help me because the level of nitrate is always around 50

i am also curious how fast a zeovit system could get rid of the nitrate. it seems work pretty slowly.

thanks for all your help. and i am sorry about my bad english.

I think the decaying livestock will certainly shoot your nitrates up. I have a hard time imagining that 50% water changes in consecutive weeks won't lower your nitrates, unless you're are otherwise overfeeding. Did you test after the 3 water changes before the vacation?

Something is not adding up for me. Consecutive large water changes should lower your nitrates. Hopefully you're using rodi water to mix your water.

First of all I would recommend to cross check the NO3 level with a different test kit to make sure yours is working well.

Adjust your skimmer to skim wet and clean it daily for some time.

Additional vacuum the sand regular with each water change.

Lets continue dosing as follows:

1 drop bak every other day
0.1*2 ml zeostart3 daily
10 ml zeolife 2 x weekly
zeozym 2 x weekly
biomate 2 drops daily
1 drop sponge power daily

You can use this dosing regimen for the next 2 week, than please report back if you notice any decrease of nutrients.

Thanks Alexander,

In the LFS, I did a nitrate test with JBL, which showed only 10. But I have heard that JBL is normally lower than others. Which nitrate test kit you would recommend ?
Thanks very much!

Do you know if they offer a NO3 photometer which works with saltwater already ? This was the problem in the past their NO3 meters just worked with freshwater.

Thank you for the link, looks like they are not able to offer a meter for NO3, their official site does also not list such a meter:
