Default Converting a 1 yr old tank to Zeovit

Hi guys,

I've ordered my Zeovit reactor and awaiting to begin the journey on a full Zeovit system. Would appreciate some guidance on what amounts of zeolites I should start with and other pertinent information for my system. Here's the details:

1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) - 256 litres
2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) - 230 litres
3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique
Yes a Skimz CR with Extra Course ARM
4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.)
No
5. Are you using Ozone
No
6. Are you using UV
No
7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume)
NYOS Quantum 160, rated for 250 - 1000 litres.
8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels
Po4 0.2 on the Hanna Checker
No3 12 ppm on the Nyos test kit
9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels
Ca 420
Alk 12dkh (dropping it, increased due to recent intro of calcium reactor)
Mg 1290

10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.)
Skimmer with a Chaeto Reactor and an 8 inch Marinepure block
11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.)
Radion XR30w G4
12. What corals do you keep
3 acan colonies (rainbow, lordwensis, and one red), 4 branching torch corals, 1 Super sun coral with 5 heads, 2 branching hammers and 1 wall hammer, variety of Zoas and 2 open brain corals.
13. Tissue color (light or dark)
Vibrant
14. How long has the tank been running
1 year and 10 days
15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system
I've been trying various methods to bring down No3 and Po4 without much success, and I've been using a variety of methods to make my acans look healthier and rounder, also to no success. Reading about the Zeovit system extensively has convinced me I need to take the plunge to truly see success in my own Reefing.
16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.)
Nil
17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.)
21kg of Pretreated dry rock, 15 kg is about 6 Mths old and 6 kg about 2 months old.
18. Any present problems
Yes
19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.)
Cyano on the sand bed and Acans not fleshy even with regular feeding of prawns and clams paste. Hair algae on two rocks.
20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.)Hanna Checker for KH and Phosphorus, and Nyos for Nitrate and Mg. Salifert for Calcium.
21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.)
Coral Snow Plus, Cyanoclean, Zeobak, zeozym and zeostart have been used in the past week to deal with cyano issues
22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.)
Salinity at 1.025, 25.5 C
23. Which salt brand do you use
Fauna Marin Professional Reef Salt

I am hoping to go for a mixed reef so I hope to bring my No3 and Po4 down so that I can start adding SPS. All help is appreciated!

Hi Vincentwangz

First of all I would recommend to download the dosing guide from:

http://www.korallen-zucht.de/files/z..._english-1.pdf

It contains a lot of useful information and will be helpful to get a feeling for the dosage.

First start with the basics products to decrease nutrients:

1. Place 0.5 liter zeovit in a Zeo Reactor. Water flow around 200 liters per hour. Connect the reactor pump to a clock timer and run the reactor pump with a 3 hour on / 3 hour off / 3 hour on interval. Please make sure the zeolite is not exposed to air while the pump is switched off. Clean the material daily. Leave the zeolite 4 weeks in the filter until you do the first change out. This is the first changing interval, others could be lengthen to 6 – 8 weeks.

2. Place 0.2 liters activated carbon in a filter sock and keep it in a passive water flow in your sump, changed every 30 days. Knead the carbon daily to keep the surface clean. Most users get perfect results with korallenzucht carbon.

3. Dose 2 drops ZeoBac daily for the first 2 weeks, flowed by a 2 – 3 x weekly dosage of 2 drops. Dose 0.2 ml ZeoStart 2 x daily (morning & evening). Dose those in front of the Zeo reactor pump while it is switched on.

Later on you could use the additional products for coral coloration. Adjust your skimmer to skim wet, keeping it clean to export as much as possible. Do a weekly water change of 5 – 10 % with a good salt.

With the system it is not recommended to use a PO4 absorber. I would recommend to remove 1/3 of the absorber if you start with zeovit, than reduce the rest over the next 6 – 8 weeks step by step to zero. If this is done keep a eye on the PO4 level which should not increase.

You can continue to teat the cyanos by daily dosing 4 ml CoralSnow mixed with 4 drops CyanoClean. Switch off the skimmer for 2 hours after dosing. Additional dose spoon ZeoZym 2 – 3 x weekly- Yu can dose it at the same time as CS/CC or at a different time. Additional vacuum the affected areas regular while the water changes and make sure the quality of our RO water is fine.

Basic water parameters looking good except the KH, try to keep them as stabile as possible close the NSW in the following ranges:

KH 6.5 – 7.5
Ca 400 – 420 mg
Mg 1250 – 1300 mg
K+ ~ 380 mg

For a nutrient poor environment K+ (potassium) seems to be a important element. I would recommend you to get a test kit for this element also, posting your results.

This is a start-up dosage which might have to be adjusted later.

G.Alexander

Added zeolites as recommended, but I used a measuring cup to measure 500 ml. Is that correct? Or should I use a weighing scale to measure 500gms?

Set it to run at 3 hr intervals.

It is a naturel material so weight can differ. It you like to measure it exactly weight each bag before opening it and use half of the material but I would not make it that complicated, a little bit more or less does not cause issue.

I've been running Zeovit according to G.Alexander's recommendations so far, and no coral seems to have suffered because of it. Only thing I have yet to do is to run 0.2l of activated carbon. However, I will introduce that next week.

Completed one week of Zeovit, and I just have one question to ask. How many times should I pump the filter to clean the Zeovit? If I'm getting constant biofilm could it be that I'm adding too much Zeobak and zeostart or is it that I added too little Zeovit stones?

Some kind of a biofilm on the glass every 2 or 3 days is normal, no worry this should get reduced over the time. I have personally pumped the reactor once in the morning and once in the evening which has worked well for me.

I'm into my 2nd week and one thing is puzzling me. My No3 is at 25ppm and my Po4 is at 0.2. How is it they have gone up instead of going down?

Does it mean I do not have enough flow in my Zeovit reactor, or that I did not put enough stones?

Have you already measured the flow by collecting water from the reactor outlet for 30 seconds and multiplied the volume by 120 ? Some kind of up / down of nutrients at the beginning is common.

Hi G, I've followed the regime and it's been 5 weeks. What's next? My Cyano seems to be reducing but it's still present.
