Default First Time ZEOVit User Looking for Guidance

I'm in the process of having our new "dream reef" custom built and looking to implement the ZEOvit system on it Day One. We currently have 2 tanks - a 90G and a Red Sea Reefer 170 - which we'll be folding into the new tank once it's ready. The new DT is 336 gallons - 72" x 30" x 36" - and we'll have a basement sump that will hold roughly 50-60 gallons as well, making the total volume around 400 gallons. I've purchased a ZEOvit reactor - ZEOvit Magnetic Reactor (4L) - Korallen-Zucht - as well as the four base products (Media, ZeoBAK, ZeoFOOD, and ZeoSTART).

Atleast initially, I'm trying to understand the startup process for this new tank. We'll be starting with fresh live sand, cured Marco's Rock (about 150 pounds), as well as about ~100 pounds of live rock we currently have in the 2 existing DTs. We'll also be moving over about 15 fish, a variety of coral (mostly LPS), once the tank is setup. Can you all share some thoughts/experience on how best to start this tank?

Welcome
Please don't use live sand. It will lead to issues such as cyano and other undesirable algae. Use dry sand/aragonite. Here you can find a step by step guide for the cycle, please keep in mind it can just be used if there are no animals in the system already:

This is a great guide, thanks for sharing! On the new dry rock (~ 150lbs), should i do anything special with that? Currently I have it in heated saltwater but not sure if I should run the startup process on that now or just wait until the tank is fully setup in the coming weeks?

The procedure is exactly the same, just the cycling takes much more time. Until the system runs stabile it can take up to a couple of month in the case of dry rock.

So, on Day 13 right now of the cycle and everything is going perfect - thank you all for the help! My question is what do I do starting on Day 15+ - I'm assuming I stop dosing the various components from the cycle but not sure?

Can you please tell us the total net volume of your system ? For later reference some additional information would be good also if you have some time:

G.Alexander
Appreciate the quick response and net volume is 400 gallons or ~1,514 liters. Here's the additional info requested:

1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) - US gallons / UK gallons / liter
2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) - US gallons / UK gallons / liter

Net of 400 gallons or ~1,514 liters

3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique

No, will be dosing 2-part eventually. Haven't set it up as of yet; however, since I'm just about to finish 14-day cycle.

4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.)

No

5. Are you using Ozone

No

6. Are you using UV

No

7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume)

Reef Octopus 300INT

Well Stocked Tank - Rated up to 450 gallons (My assumption is that ultimately, I'll be at this level)
Medium Stocked Tank - Rated up to 575 gallons
Light Stocked Tank - Rated up to 700 gallons

8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels

NO3 is at 0 right now, I haven't measured PO4 yet

9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels

Measuring these tomorrow, will provide an update

10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.)

Refugium with 4x 4x4 Marine Pur blocks plus Chaeto

11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.)

3x EcoTech Radion XR30w G4 Pro, brand new!

12. What corals do you keep

Right now I have a light load mixed between SPS, LPS, and Softies. The majority of what is in now are zoas, leathers, mushrooms, and a few different euphilias

13. Tissue color (light or dark)

?

14. How long has the tank been running

On Day 13 of 14-day ZEO cycle

15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system

To reduce nutrients and build a successful reef tank!

16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.)

As mentioned previously, I will begin dosing 2-part soon but I haven't begun as of yet. Amounts TBD.

17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.)

I started with dry rock which I cured in heated saltwater for about 6 weeks prior to installation. Roughly 200 pounds total.

18. Any present problems

No

19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.)

None yet!

20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.)

A combination of Hanna Checkers, Red Sea Test Kits, and a Milwaukee Digital Refractometer. Not to mention the Apex probes for pH, Salinity, Temp, and ORP.

21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.)

Only dosing amounts per 14-day cycle at this point

22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.)

Salin - 1.026
Temp - 78 - 79 F
pH - around 7.8 (I'm going to setup CO2 scrubber soon to boost)

23. Which salt brand do you use

Red Sea Salt (Blue Bucket)

Thank you so much, lets continue dosing as follows:

ZeoBac – 15 drops 3 x weekly
ZeoStart – 1.5 ml 2 x daily
SpongePower – 15 drops daily

Around week 4 replace 50% of the ZeoVit material, after the exchange dose ZeoBac daily for 10 days.

Next exchange will be 4 weeks later, than replace 90% of the material and as after every exchange dose ZeoBac daily for 10 days after the replacement.

Following changing intervals can be lengthen to 6 – 8 weeks.

So admittedly I was a little slack on starting the second round of dosing and outside of some weekly dosing of AcroPower and daily dosing of KZ LPS, I haven't been doing it. The tank overall has been looking great minus the diatom outbreak (which is to be expected with a new tank in my experience) but looking to get back on the system! I ran a full water test today and here's where I'm at:
  • Nitrates: 5 ppm
  • Nitrites: 0.2 ppm
  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Alk: 7.7 dKH
  • Calcium: 526 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1300 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.04 ppm
  • Salinity: 1.026

So what would you recommend re-starting the dosing with given the above? I have been pumping the stones each night and the carbon will be replaced in another 2 weeks (so right at 4 weeks total usage). Also, I'm planning on adding some additional coral (SPS/LPS) tomorrow - should I start dosing the amino acids and/or additional LPS?

I recommend to start dosing again as usual:

ZeoBac – 15 drops 3 x weekly
ZeoStart – 1.5 ml 2 x daily
SpongePower – 15 drops daily

At the moment no additional products should be necessary, lets see how the new added corals are doing over the next couple of weeks.

So having a pretty large velvet outbreak with the fish which means I need to move them. I'm going to keep everything running (lights, dosing, etc) as well as the inverts while I go fallow. Do i adjust any of the zeovit dosing during this period since I won't have all the fish in there?

Velvet means fast death, please remove all fish to QT and treat them with CP (Chloroquine Phosphate) immediately. I had an outbreak and was not vigilant enough removing fish quickly, it completely wiped out my tank (all 10 fish) in 7 days.
