Default T5 advice

I'm using T5s for first time on my new tank got a 8 tube 54w unit and I'm needing advice on tube combs iv read a bit but most say it's down to personal preference so a good starting point a can tweak later. And also read tubes need changing 9-12 months is there any signs to look for when the tube are getting ready for a change?
Cheers
Martin

Hello Martin, with 8 bulbs this is the combination of korallenzucht bulbs I would use:

4 x NewGeneration (white)
3 x BluePlus (blue)
1 x FijiPurple (purple)

Alternatively:

5 x NewGeneration (white)
2 x BluePlus (blue)
1 x FijiPurple (purple)

Hi Martin,

I personally use ATI bulbs and my combination includes

4x B+
3x ABS
1x Actinic

I'll be aiming to change mine within an 8-9 month period, but the plan is the change two bulbs at a time and do a pair every month or let all of the bulbs run for 4 months, then on month 5, 6, 7 and 8 swap out a pair each month, then let them run for 4 months again and carry on the cycle. That way, at least in my mind, I'm changing the bulbs and PAR output consistently, rather than letting all tubes degrade and replace with fresh in one go.

Thanks for the replys I'll have a look and get some ordered. Is there any specific order front to bk for the bulbs or doesn't it matter? Is there any signs when the bulbs are ready for a change any thing to look for or its it just a drop off in par unnoticeable to the eye without a par meter?

Hi Johnson's Reef,

Generally T5 bulbs lose around 30% PAR after 9 months of use 8-10 hours a day.
You won't notice it with your eye because it's slow process. But your SPS corals will start to lose/change coloration.

If you have LPS/Softies tank then you may keep your bulbs much longer as they are not so demanding.

Oops, I noticed that you asked in May
